ARTICLES

The Secure Act Becomes Law:

The Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act, better known as the SECURE Act, was signed into law on Friday, December 20, 2019.

Starting January 1, 2020, individuals will need to start withdrawing money-Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) from their non-Roth IRA type accounts at age 72, a change from the current withdrawal requirement of age 70½.  For Roth IRAs, there are no Required Minimum Distributions until after death.  Learn about all of the new changes in the law by reading The Secure Act Becomes Law”.  For further information, contact Legend’s James J. Holtzman, CFP® at (412) 635-9210.

Stocks Soaring In 2019 – What Just Happened?:

Stocks closed 2019 with a return of +31.48%.  As the excellent year for stocks came to an end, it’s wise to remember that the 2019 bull market repeatedly defied widespread worries all year long, and returns in 2019 were defined by the actions of the Federal Reserve.  A year ago, large stocks were in the throes of a 19.8% drop.  On December 19, 2018, the Fed chair had announced a quarter-point hike in interest rates, which triggered a short-lived plunge that, after rounding, qualified as a bear market.  Learn more by reading Stocks Soaring In 2019 – What Just Happened?”.  For further information, contact Legend’s Louis P. Stanasolovich, CFP® at (412) 635-9210.

Three Major Investing And Tax Planning Trends For 2020:

2.0% U.S. Growth and Low Rates.  The latest indication of what to expect on interest rates and economic growth came on December 17, 2019, in an interview with Robert S. Kaplan, President and Chief Executive Officer, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.  “We expect, again 2.0%-plus growth, 2.0% growth for next year, unemployment rate around 3.5%,” Mr. Kaplan told the Council on Foreign Relations.  “We’ll have some firming in inflation gradually toward 2.0%.  And I think with that profile, I think  the right—at 1.5% to 1.75% Fed Funds rate, I think the right thing for us to do is stay right where we are unless something changes materially on the upside or the downside.”  Learn more by reading Three Major Investing And Tax Planning Trends For 2020”.  For further information, contact Legend’s James J. Holtzman, CFP® at (412) 635-9210.

What If The Optimists Are Right?:

What if the glass is half full?  What if the optimists are right?  Although no one can predict the next big more in stocks, and investors don’t want to bet their retirement portfolio on it, it’s not hard to see the case for a bull market in 2020—even after a spectacular year for stocks in 2019.  Learn more by reading What If The Optimists Are Right?”.  For further information, contact Legend’s Louis P. Stanasolovich, CFP® at (412) 635-9210.

How Worldwide Demographics Affect Portfolios:

While China, Japan, Germany, and other major economies are grappling with a decline in the working-age population in the decades ahead, the U.S. working-age population is expected to grow.  Since growth in the size of the labor force is one of the two determinants in economic growth, it’s a key fundamental factor that will shape the future of financial markets.  This is a key fundamental affecting long-term personal financial plans.  It’s important and it has practical consequences on retirement portfolios.  Learn more by reading How Worldwide Demographics Affect Portfolios”.  For further information, contact Louis P. Stanasolovich, CFP® at (412) 635-9210.
