Fortune Small Business Magazine, in conjunction with Winning Workplaces, searches the country to identify the nominees for the “Best Bosses” competition.

The Inc. 5000 List showcases the fastest-growing, privately-held companies in America. Candidates were required to complete an extensive application.  Then, in order to complete the application, companies submitted revenue verification materials to confirm revenue figures. Companies were ranked according to the percentage growth of their annual revenue over a three-year period.

 

In order to qualify for the Inc. 5000 award, companies were required to meet the following criteria:

 

- Three years prior, they generated at least $100,000 in revenue;
- Have generated at least $2 million in revenue during the current year;
- They must be privately held, for profit, based in the U.S., and independent (not a subsidiary or division of another company).

 

The Inc. 5000 List is a distinguished editorial award, a celebration of innovation, a network of entrepreneurial leaders, and an effective public relations showcase.  The Inc. 5000 ranks companies by overall revenue growth over a three-year period.

“Data for the rankings were obtained from questionnaires mailed to independent RIA firms in early 2007.  The universe was identified with the help of the Discovery-RIA database maintained by The Financial Information Group of Red Bank, N.J.  Additional information was obtained as needed from Form ADVs filed by advisors with the Securities and Exchange Commission.”

 

“To be eligible, firms had to:

 

1. be registered as an advisor with the SEC;
2. offer financial planning services;
3. have predominantly individual clients;
4. have at least $50 million in assets under management; and
5. be independent, i.e. not a subsidiary of a larger entity.

 

“The ranking includes only advisory account assets.  Assets in brokerage accounts, as defined by the SEC’s new (2007) rule regarding the broker-dealer exemption, were excluded, as were commissioned products such as load-share mutual funds.”

After 2010, Legend determined that mostly brokers are included on this award list.  The list had become too focused on commercial activities and, therefore, Legend elected not to participate in subsequent years. 

 

AdvisorOne’s “Top Wealth Managers” lists Registered Investment Advisors according to the average assets under management per client, according to the averages of their peers. 

 

Applicants were required to complete an extensive application compiling data such as average assets under management per client, firm growth or decline in the previous year and average three-year growth. 

 

The following criteria for this award listed below was excerpted from Wealth Manager Magazine, which became AdvisorOne Magazine:

 

“To qualify for our ranking, firms had to meet the following criteria:

 

They are registered investment advisers with the SEC.

 

They have minimum assets under management of $50 million.

 

The firms must also offer financial planning services.”

This award measures how a company’s human resource practices enable greater employee productivity and provides increased value to the organization’s customers.  By voluntary completion of the nomination form, a company may nominate themselves or be nominated by another party.  Essays, completed by the nominator, include descriptions of the business initiatives of the chosen category, challenges faced, the results of the chosen initiative(s) or course taken, the lessons learned, and the creativity used in solving the challenge.  A panel then evaluates the responses and determines who the finalists of each category should be. There is one winner per category, but typically there are up to three finalists for each of the three categories.
